Established Canadian Couturier Pursues Exciting New Vision

Toronto, Ontario – Hasmig Possian, an international couturier and founding member of the Couture Association of Toronto, is using the launch of her new downtown salon to showcase her own elegant couture and to celebrate several up-and-coming Toronto designers.

Hasmig is a Designer with a Vision. Haute Couture is a highly competitive business. New designers rarely have an opportunity to learn “the Business” from established professionals. Hasmig believes that promise and talent must be encouraged. Her vision is to offer selected fashion designers a venue at her new salon at 50 Cumberland Street in the Village Arcade, to showcase their work.

“After more than 22 years, I’m established – people know who I am. But I remember how hard it was, starting out,” says Hasmig who has been in the Bay and Cumberland area since 1975. “Now I take every opportunity as an established designer, to give promising fashion designers a chance to be seen. Many of these gifted artists get very little support elsewhere.”

Hasmig will be introducing Couture for children, along with her prêt-à-porter Holiday Leisure Wear. Since High Fashion remains the heart of her business, Hasmig will exhibit at her Opening, several of the outstanding design pieces from the body of her collected work.

“People are returning to elegance and getting away from the fads,” says Hasmig. “Couture is one-of-a-kind. While many stores offer clothes that make a strong fashion statement, it’s everyone else’s fashion statement as well.”

The “By Invitation Only” Opening, on November 19th, 1997 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm will introduce the featured designers. Hasmig will feature Ursula Kowalik, a designer of classical evening and cocktail wear, and Angela De Montigny, a First Nations designer whose elegant creations use many traditional materials, symbols and handwork. A champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception will round out this elegant evening.

Jewelry, designed by Elizabeth Walczak, textiles designed by Judith Pisano and gloves created by Daniel Storto, have been exclusively commissioned by Hasmig to complement her couture collection.
